We're Gonna Party (and run a wrestling conglomerate) Like it's 1979 PDF Print E-mail

Steph's mad because the internet knows that she's making sure this picture remains factually accurate.Okay. So:

"WWE management is said to be very upset at the amount of news that has been leaking online in recent months. Stephanie McMahon was said to be furious when she learned of reports that revealed Chris Jericho was the person behind the "Save Us" promos. Stephanie went as far as to review all company cell phone records of the writing team, and did a forensic check of the computers for e-mails leaks. This was not the first time WWE conducted such searches.

WWE didn't find any guilty parties, but did find excessive private calls, and yelled at the writers for it. Stephanie's wrath did not stop there. She wants to revise the contracts of WWE's creative writers to explicity state that WWE has 100% ownership of any ideas or concepts they come up with while working for WWE. She has already banned writers from being interviewed or talking to anybody from the media. Even after their time is up at WWE, they are not allowed to talk about their experience working for the company."

Now you know what's going on. Now, I need you to know something else. I need you to understand that this article isn't necessarily for you. Feel free to keep on reading--this is your site--but this isn't addressed to you. It's addressed to Stephanie McMahon. Or if it's Steph Levesque, or Stephanie McMahon-Levesque. I don't really know what your exact name is.

I don't really care, either; just as you don't care what my name is. What you do care about, however, is running your inherited pro-wrestling monopoly as if it's the year 1979. You really think checking cell phone records and company computers is going to stop information leaks? You're convinced you can control secrets in a world where even CIA operatives get outed? Word? Your father couldn't even keep storylines under wraps back when the only threats were printed periodicals, and you're trying to prevent information leaks in the year two thousand fucking seven?

I'm sorry, Steph: if I can find a picture of Britney Spears' vajay-jay online an hour after she gets home from her nightly supper of big macs and yayo, then you're not going to be able to keep something like a signing a major industry superstar-cum-media darling a secret for several months. It's the internet, babe. It exists on every month of the year; not just October. And while it isn't necessarily the modus operandi of BackstagePowers.com to be first to the scene with insider news, you can't really blame those who do. At the end of the day, they're fans.

And anybody who has ever been involved with the entertainment industry (who isn't named McMahon, apparently) knows one fact about fandom to be indelible:

Fans will find shit out. Deal with it. Embrace it.

What kind of entertainment company can hope to survive, despite being ignorant of the trends of not only the entire entertainment industry, but also their core fanbase? Easy: the same company that's probably wondering why no analyst worth a damn (not even JBL!) ever recommends buying WWE stock. There are a million different ways to use this internet "problem" of yours to your advantage--every small wrestling fed with a worthwhile roster (and some without) has done so, yet the juggernaut of the industry still considers it little more than a vehicle of industrial espionage. Hopefully, Steph, you'll get your shit together and realize that your company still in an advantageous position over most other entertainment companies, insofar as there aren't weekly leaks of entire SmackDown! and ECW video tapings online before they air.

Fact is, you still have a lot of time to turn into the skid on this one, and protect your family's company from an eventuality of obsolescence brought upon by fear and ignorance of technology and the fan base you could be building stronger connections with using that technology. I suggest you do, because we're not going anywhere, and you're not going to stop the flow of information; you can only hope to control it.
